Pauline Menczer wins Rip Curl Girl Pro Hossegor and moves up to #1 on WQS.
Les Estagnots Beach, Hossegor/Seignosse, France August 18, 2002: Pauline Menczer stole the finals in a battle with fellow Australian Lynette MacKenzie to win the 10th edition of the Rip Curl Girl Pro in France.
In an epic battle that saw the veteran surfers match each other wave for wave, Menczer took command and first position in the dying 60 seconds by turning a small right-hander into the highest scoring wave of the final. Although surfing at a world class level, young surfers Sofia Mulanovich (Peru) and Chelsea Georgeson (Australia) remained outclassed by the experienced veterans.
Former World Champion and three time runner-up, Menczer, 32, cemented her reputation as one of the best female surfers in the world with an amazing display of top turns and re-entries.
"I've been surfing well recently" Menczer said with a large smile. "I recently won a WQS event at Huntington Beach, California, and just last week I finished 3rd in Anglet, France. This win has strengthened my position on the ratings, I should now move into #1 on the WQS." Entering the event, Menczer was ranked 14th.
