Pauline Menczer wins 2002 U.S. Open of Surfing
Huntington Beach, Calif., August 4, 2002: Pauline Menczer returned to Southern California and successfully defended her US Open of Surfing title. It was Menczer's seventh career WQS victory, and she earned $6,000 for the effort.
To the crowds delight, Menczer snapped her favorite board after pulling an insane floater in the semifinals. Menczer surfed the remaining minutes of the heat on a backup board but easily advanced to the finals.
The final round of the contest consisted of Pauline Menczer, Trudy Todd, Sofia Mulanovich and Jacqueline Silva. Todd held a commanding lead for much of the final until it was seized from her by a determined Menczer in the last 6 minutes of the event.
Menczer, who came into the event ranked 15th in the WQS stated, "I do thrive off the crowd here. They say surfers are the biggest showoffs, which is true."
